That’s exactly what drew Chicago couple Abbey and Camden to southern Italy, where they discovered that Puglia offered everything they had imagined — and much, much more.

When they first began imagining their wedding, Abbey and Camden knew one thing for certain: they wanted to create an experience that felt just as memorable for their guests as it would for themselves.
“Camden and I knew we wanted a wedding that also felt like a vacation for our guests,” Abbey explained. “We wanted somewhere beautiful, coastal, warm and with few tourists.”
Although a family friend first introduced them to the region through relatives living in Lecce, Abbey said it was a site inspection at Castello Monaci that truly sealed the decision.
“Castello Monaci played a huge part in selecting Puglia as our wedding destination,” she shared. “It looked so beautiful in photos and videos. It was honestly a fairy tale come to life.”
Like so many couples planning a destination wedding, they weren’t simply looking for a beautiful venue — they were searching for a place that could become part of the story itself.
Why more couples are choosing Puglia
Every Italian destination has its own personality.
Lake Como embodies timeless glamour. Tuscany captivates with rolling vineyards and Renaissance charm. The Amalfi Coast dazzles with dramatic cliffs and iconic sea views.

For Abbey and Camden, practicality also played an important role. Although they briefly considered celebrating in Chicago, as well as Florence, where Abbey had studied at university, the numbers quickly made the decision clear.
In fact, while destination weddings are often assumed to come with a higher price tag, but for Abbey and Camden, Puglia proved to be the opposite.
“Hosting a two-day event there was actually more affordable than hosting a one-day event in Chicago or Florence,” Abbey revealed.

Beautiful landscapes may first attract couples to Puglia, but it’s rarely what they remember most. Instead, it’s the feeling the region leaves behind.
“We really fell in love with everything. The food, wine, beaches, the people! Everyone that we met was so kind and welcoming.”
That warm Southern Italian hospitality, paired with exceptional local cuisine and a slower pace of life is exactly what makes weddings in Puglia feel so special — and what makes couples return long after the celebrations have ended.
A wedding that unfolded like a story
According to Abbey and Camden, the way the day naturally evolved through the different spaces of Castello Monaci made everything feel effortless.
“Our favourite parts of the wedding were getting to explore all of the different areas of the castle. As the day went on, each guest moved from one area to the next,” Abbey reminisced. “It was almost like entering a new party every time, with something new to explore and celebrate.”
And while exchanging vows remains their favourite memory, they did mention that the dessert table was ‘over the top’.
It’s one of the greatest luxuries many of Puglia’s historic venues offer. Rather than confining the celebration to one room, they allow the day to unfold naturally — from gardens to courtyards, terraces to candlelit receptions — creating an experience that feels beautifully immersive, from beginning to end.

After experiencing it first hand, Abbey and Camden wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Puglia to other couples planning a destination wedding.
Their practical advice? Rent a car, as taxis and rideshare services can be limited, especially outside the larger towns. And learning a few basic Italian phrases can make interactions with locals even more rewarding.
Most importantly, though, they left with memories that have turned into something much bigger than a wedding destination. The couple will be bringing their baby boy back there for his first birthday next year.
Perhaps that’s the greatest testament to the region of all. For many couples, Puglia isn’t simply where their wedding takes place — it’s somewhere they find themselves returning to, long after the last dance.
